Amaka is a dynamic artist hailing from Lagos and now based in Southern California. With her alluring melodies and genre-blending beats, she has carved a unique path from Lagos to California, enriching her music with diverse cultural influences. As she prepares to release her highly anticipated album "Oasis," we sat down with the rising star to delve into the heart of her musical journey.
The transformative journey from Lagos to Southern California has influenced Amaka's musical evolution. This cross-continental odyssey has imbued her music with a rich tapestry of African rhythms and global inspirations. "They've shaped my music in ways that have expanded its horizons. I can tap into a myriad of influences because I draw inspiration from African music and have always been fascinated by musical traditions from around the world since my youth. These elements undoubtedly manifest in my sound."
"Oasis," her latest album, marks a pivotal moment in Amaka's solo career. This release marks her bloom as a solo artist; she explains, "for me, 'Oasis' carries profound significance. While its dictionary definition denotes a physical place, to me, it signifies an internal discoveryβa place within oneself where confidence, freedom, and authenticity converge. This is where I have ultimately arrived, and 'Oasis' represents the culmination of that journey. I hope everyone listening can be inspired to find that inner sanctuary within themselves or, at the very least, feel it resonating as they listen."β
The Collaborative Synergy with producer Kaytranada has been a driving force behind Amaka's musical endeavours. She praises his fearless approach to the production of Oasis,"He's truly one-of-a-kind. He fearlessly explores the depths of his production, with an innate ability to evoke emotions and transport listeners through his music. Working alongside someone who establishes such a foundation, and my role as a songwriter striving to channel that same energy always yields exceptional results."
Amaka's transition from being part of the duo VanJess to pursuing a solo career is one notable she shares "I simply became more self-assured. I began to recognise my potential, and this realisation required considerable effort. I had struggled with self-doubt throughout my life for various reasons. When I lost my father, someone who believed in me more than anyone else, I reflected deeply on his words. Above all, he wished me to recognise my uniqueness and never give up on myself. So, I made a conscious decision to honour his memory and to honour myself. 'Oasis' reflects my journey toward self-acceptance, marking the beginning of my true self-expression".β

Stepping into the solo spotlight following her sister's departure from music, Amaka's creative process has become more intentional and daring. She explains, βmy creative process has become more deliberate and audacious. Being on my own has left me with no room to hide, pushing me to take bold, creative risks and take ownership of them. This journey has propelled significant growth in how I approach my songs, vocal production, songwriting, visual direction, and more. I'm eager for people to experience the music I've created, both following 'Oasis' and to witness my ongoing evolution as an artist."
Genre-blending defines Amaka's musical style, and "Oasis" continues this tradition, pushing the boundaries of R&B and offering unique sonic fusions for listeners to explore. "It does so because it doesn't try to. Rather than that, I think Itβs what happens when you create with no rules but to evoke honest feelings and make music that feels good. And, of course, me being simply a huge music nerd and fan who loves referencing and channelling the classics that I love makes it a lot of fun. We've made a collection of dance songs that feel very special. "β
Amaka's evolution from her humble beginnings on YouTube to global recognition has not altered her approach to crafting music. Despite the accolades she has received, she remains dedicated to creating from an authentic place, striving to preserve the innocence in her work. "My approach hasn't changed significantly due to external factors. If it did, I wouldn't create from a genuine place. Lately, I've been consciously trying to create with innocence in mind. This journey has led me to a place where I'm constantly pushing myself to improve, whether in vocal production, songwriting, or visual direction. I'm excited for people to hear the music I've created beyond 'Oasis' and to witness my continued growth as an artist."
With "Oasis" set to release during the summer season, Amaka hopes listeners will experience a sense of liberation and exhilaration as they immerse themselves in the album's tracks. She envisions her music inspiring listeners to dance, let loose, and momentarily escape the world's chaos. The lead single, "Cruisin'," is a powerful statement of arrival, introducing the album with boldness and fiery. She shares, "It sets the perfect tone for the album. While it may seem audacious in isolation, within the project context, it will all make perfect sense."
In her upcoming album "Oasis," Amaka amalgamates her rich cultural influences, creative partnerships, and personal growth to create a musical journey that is both vibrant and introspective. As listeners immerse themselves in the diverse sounds of "Oasis," they are invited to discover their oasis of confidence, freedom, and self-discovery.
