Non-conformist, vintage and expressive. Three words that not only describe Maryam Kosoko’s edgy, and unconventional style but also introduce us to her unique personality. A super-talented fashion model and stylist, Maryam’s deep knowledge of self is hard to dismiss.
From her biggest motivation to her most fulfilling moment and what makes her special, Maryam bares it all in this spotlight feature with the Deeds Mag team.
In a world full of replicas, Maryam Kosoko resonates with the need for originality and this guides her as she navigates her career. She believes what makes her stick out in such a fashion-forward city like Lagos is her exceptional style. “I think my style makes me stand out, plus my features too,” she says.
So far, in her explosive run, she notes that her biggest lesson has been understanding the value of time and its essence. However, she also acknowledges the importance of extending grace to one's self.
As a Muslim alternative woman, Maryam is particular about setting the pace, and creating a blueprint for representation for other young people. She's also quite enthusiastic about giving room to grow, discover and uncover talent as young creatives. “We are all finding ourselves, take your time,” Maryam urges.
Living her dreams one day at a time, Maryam seems to find her craft quite fulfilling. On her most exciting moment thus far, Maryam says, “I think it was styling for Adidas Nigeria in 2021. It felt like I was living my dream.”
While Maryam’s personality appears to be outgoing and expressive, being creative isn't always a smooth ride. So when the going gets tough, she swears by the power of introspection and reflection, going back to remind herself of the things that inspire her.
As the indigenous culture and fashion scene in Lagos, Nigeria continues to bloom, Maryam hopes to collaborate with more local creatives. “I would love to style new, underground artists in my city,” she says.
For most creatives, their dreams, and aspirations are what keep them going, and Maryam is not any different. She aspires to create an avenue for young talents to get a fresh start.
“In five years, I see myself owning a fashion studio in Lagos. Somewhere young creatives can get started and I can help them kickstart the journey to achieving their dreams,” .
