Sackitey Tesa Mate-Kodjo is a self-thought artist from Accra, Ghana, who specialises mostly in conceptual photography. He uses this medium to convey his thoughts and feelings while reinterpreting his environment. His storytelling visuals are influenced by symbolism from many cultures, common experiences, and everyday life. Various pieces are merged and new views are created through prop-making and styling.
On his inspiration;
My latest piece is inspired by love. It is part of a series of images called ‘Heart Matters’ which explores the roller-coaster of love.
On his favourite work;
My Favorite work so far is ‘Front Row Seats To The Theatre Of Life’. This project is inspired by and dedicated to my mother who is a costume designer and fashion consultant. When I was a child, she would take my siblings and I to watch stage plays at night which I very much enjoyed. The image draws inspiration from the Greek comedy and tragedy mask which is widely known to represent the performing arts.
On his creative process;
My creative process mostly involves experimentation. I draw inspiration from both the tangible and intangible; from clothes of people walking on the street to poems and songs. I like to explore how different objects and symbols in my environment can be reconceptualized and given a new meaning. By isolating these elements and reimagining them it allows my audience to focus on the mundane of everyday life.
