#THROUGHMYLENS: For the latest iteration of our #ThroughMyLens content pillar, we dive into Zekaria’s  (zek.snaps) work —discussing his creative process, his journey, his favorite work and his aims and objectives for this year (2025)

London-based photographer Zekaria has cultivated a career deeply rooted in personal connection and creative lineage. For him, every project carries a distinct meaning, showcasing the intricate depths of each talent’s unique style while seamlessly aligning with the vision of the creative team.

Reflecting on past projects, Zekaria highlights the Shenseea cover as a standout moment—a vivid celebration of Caribbean heritage and diaspora. “The essence of the project was undeniable, especially with the creative team being predominantly Caribbean. It truly represented the culture at its finest.” He also recalls Akon’s cover for Issue 01 – Culture Unwrapped with equal reverence, describing it as a personal favorite. “That project really illustrated Akon’s identity and legacy as one of the pioneering giants of Africa. It reminded me of my childhood, growing up with his music as a soundtrack to those days.”

Zekaria’s journey into the creative industry began serendipitously, thanks to a close friend who connected him with a notable UK musician. This pivotal moment launched a trajectory that saw him collaborating with like-minded creatives, all unified by a shared desire to tell stories rooted in cultural heritage. “It was those early connections with friends that galvanized my career and allowed me to network with incredible talents who share a vision of showcasing our roots.”

His creative process is as multifaceted as the projects he undertakes, drawing from unexpected sources of inspiration. “Anime is a huge influence,” he shares, noting how it informs his approach to color palettes for grading. Equally, filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock and David Cronenberg inspire him with their daring, rule-breaking cinematography. Art exhibitions, particularly those featuring Salvador Dalí’s surreal works, also spark his imagination. “Dalí’s timeless paintings are a constant source of inspiration. I dream of replicating one of his masterpieces as a cover shoot for a major editorial someday.”

Looking ahead, Zekaria’s vision is ambitious and clear. He aims to elevate Deeds to a global platform, curating meaningful collaborations and expanding its reach. “I want to produce more in-depth cover stories that deeply resonate with audiences and talents alike. Activations that unite people from all diasporas, and opportunities that attract new readers who want to join the journey and movement.”

Above all, Zekaria remains committed to creating impactful work that reflects the beauty and complexity of cultural identity. “My mission is to continue working with extraordinary creatives, to curate stories that matter, and to lead innovative projects that inspire and connect people. This is just the beginning.”
